Is there anything wrong with using
(setq (make-local-variable 'my-var) value)
when my-var has been made buffer local with
(make-variable-buffer-local 'my-var)
Except that it looks unnecessary of course ... ;-)
But it is not in my use case.

No, but the setq should be a set.
