I have GNU/Linux Kubuntu 8.04 and bash:

$ echo $SHELL
/bin/bash

Running the above command from Makefile (make update-elcfiles) prints, 
in temp.sed,

ELCFILES = \\

Instead, running from command line

ELCFILES = \\\


There is a bug somewhere. Perhaps, in 'Hardy' ?
