This is in my patched version (CVS Emacs 23) and I am not sure if this happens in the unpatched version. However line 284 in lisp-mode says (define-key menu-map [eldoc] '(menu-item "Auto-Display Documentation Strings" eldoc-mode 284---> :button (:toggle . eldoc-mode) :help "Display the documentation string for the item under cursor")) Should not that line check with (boundp 'eldoc-mode)?
