I apparently did not get your mail myself, but took this as an approval, 
once Kim fixed the display bugs.

As for the colour or brightness, feel free to make it anything you like. 
Secondary-selection is just what I've long been using for this. Using a 
background is useful however, since it combines nicely with most 
font-locking, which tends to set foregrounds, boldness, etc.
