I am a huge fan of mail indexing programs like: swish++, mairix, glimpse, namazu etc. Many of these will decode base64 and quoted-printable parts. Also they are much faster than grep can ever hope to be. Many Emacs based email clients (like Gnus, MH-E) have interfaces to these programs. May be rmail can be improved to support these programs?
