Text properties are more than inappropriate here because they are attached to the characters and not to the string: three different substrings could all be marked, say, 'buffer! Davis -- This product is sold by volume, not by mass. If it appears too dense or too sparse, it is because mass-energy conversion has occurred during shipping.
