Comming up with good UI is way harder. Sorry, I don't understand: what UI? defface is not a user-level feature, it's a programmer feature. Did you mean API, perhaps? If you do mean the API, I believe Miles was trying to make it better, more convenient. The need to repeat the same face attributes over and over is a PITA, IMHO.
