On my primary work-machine (not a umd.edu machine), i cannot run gdb
emacs successfully.. If someone knows offhand what i am doing wrong
below, that would be very helpful. Thanks.

;; 2002-06-10 T14:04:10-0400 (Monday) Deepak Goel
Below is a session for emacs-21.2.90, run on a machine-->
~/emacs $ uname -snvrmapi
SunOS nickel 5.7 Generic sun4u sparc SUNW,UltraSPARC-IIi-Engine
i was careful to cd to the source-directory of emacs-21.2.90 (and not
some other emacs). Om this machine, the same behavior occurred for
emacs-21.1.1 when i ran gdb from *its* source-directory.
This failure to start emacs seems to be specific to this machine.. for
instance, On all the umd.edu machines, be they alpha's or sunOs's, i
can start emacs-21.1 under gdb-4.18 (after the breakpoints) just fine.

Sounds like some incompatibility between Emacs and GDB. For example,
can it be that GDB doesn't support 64-bit executables, while Emacs
was built as a 64-bit program?
In any case, there's nothing wrong with the commands you typed,
AFAICS.

I just learnt about the 'file' command and did a 'file' on both gdb
and emacs-21.2.90.
they both result in:
ELF 32-bit MSB executable SPARC Version 1, dynamically linked, not
stripped
(this is on a SunOS 5.7 Generic sun4u sparc SUNW,
UltraSPARC-IIi-Engine)
any more hints?
Thanks

This is either a GDB bug, or a situation GDB does not try to handle
(as Eli suggested). It can't be due to an Emacs bug per se.
So I suggest you file a GDB bug report.
I do not know whether any of the GDB developers uses or cares about
Solaris. You may need to debug the GDB problem yourself.

Thanks, submitted.
(i will also try to rebuild gdb forcing it to use gcc rather than
solaris' cc.. i think emacs was built using gcc..)

FWIW, GDB works for me on Solaris 5.8.
