Rather than deleting the desupported platforms from etc/MACHINES
it might be better to leave a brief entry for each one, saying
"Desupported in Emacs 23."

Eli already devised a system for that: see the end of etc/MACHINES. It
is not yet complete, but will get there.

Was it me? I'd hate to take credit for someone else's work.
Anyway, it's worthwhile to mention that etc/MACHINES has this text
right at the beginning:
Some obsolete platforms are unsupported beginning with Emacs 23.1, see
the full list at the end of this file.
