There is a tooltip telling _exactly_ what mouse-1 will do (which I believe is different from what people would expect from a link: same behavior as RET). A link face would not eliminate surprise for people who fail to pay any attention to the tooltip and it would override the current faces, which are very important for efficient use of Dired.
