The install directory layout need not mirror the source layout. Why not just
_install_ things as gnus has always done -- into one directory?
[AFAIK, to get subdir loading to work you appropriate "subdirs.el" files in
place; Gnus could have one in the source tree to accomodate loading from
there.]
