Well, filling for docstrings could work so it doesn't wrap the first line, but marks chars exceding 80 in a warning face orwhatever. It could take into account $var{NAME} or $NAME$ expansion (assuming a length-preserving highlighting) when computing the number of columns, not only for the first line, but the rest of the docstring.
