    Maybe Ken should base its work on the emacs-unicode branch so it
    doesn't need to worry about another branch.

That sounds like a good idea to me, if the unicode branch
is working well enough to make it feasible.  The unicode branch
will be ready fairly soon, long before Ken's branch is anywhere
near ready.
