This seems to be related to the coding system issue people have been
discussing lately.  But it says we have a serious problem.

Well it's already emacs 21.2 and debian woody, and I still can't cut
and paste Chinese from rxvt, mozilla, whatever, into emacs, without
a big crud encrustation.  E.g. even "date" becomes

^[%/2\200\213big5-0^B\230\304\317\230\250\277^[(B  6^[%/2\200\211big5-0^B\230\247\315^[(B 20 15:\
44:42 CST 2002

So I must first save it into a file or do date|xclip, and then C-x i
to read it into emacs.
