I suspect that pressure from Microsoft had to do with making them state that position. So I think that by doing this we cater to Microsoft rather than to the real wishes of the X developers. (The X Consortium does not exist any more. The people who maintain X nowadays, the XFree86 group, told us they don't care about this issue.)
