That would be really useful. On one hand, because it'd be easier to do
some things with the modeline, in the sense that now to do fancy things
you have to resort to :exec and do fancy tricks, etc., while with your
proposed method all full power of elisp buffer/string manipulation would
be at user's (or module's writer's) hands. On the other, because that
would make mode-line information (like current line / column) far easier
to use from a module.
