    The tricky thing about this is that update-game-score.c gets compiled
    with different options depending on whether or not we have access to a
    shared game directory.

It should be able to check that at run time instead.
That would be much better.

Always use a run-time check rather than a compile-time check, whenever that
is possible.

You should be able to make it stat its own executable and see if it is setuid.
