There's no of course about it and the functions in msdos.c might just be
for mouse click events.

Yes but for mouse highlighting, specifically, MSDOS has to know where the mouse
is _in between_ click events. Does it? (AFAIK this is why highlighting won't
work on an xterm although you can certainly click on mouse sensitive parts of
the screen using xt-mouse.el).
