Much of the frustration on this list seems to occur earlier in the development process. Other projects, notably XEmacs, make beta releases for inclusion with unstable GNU/Linux distributions such as Debian's sid and the Mandrake Cooker. It occurs to me that if Emacs did this too i.e made beta releases from the trunk, there would be more pairs of eyes and it would therefore make for a faster stable release. It doesn't seem realistic or even reasonable to expect a handful of developers to do all the work. I don't know, maybe the pretests do get included in such distributions but it seems to me that more leverage could be obtained by always having a beta version (not in CVS) available. Nick
