This is now controlled by the variables:
`vc-hg-symbolic-revision-styles'
`vc-hg-use-file-version-for-mode-line-version'
To show the local Hg revision number (rather than the changeset hash),
try something like:
(setq vc-hg-symbolic-revision-styles '("{rev}"))
