I think the default for `dired-free-space-program' is wrong. Running
`df' can cause serious trouble with the Nightmare File System, and may
be fairly slow anyhow. I've several times fallen for running dired --
as root, and thus without my normal customizations -- on systems which
have NFS problems of some sort. Then the invoked df can hang and may
make the system unusable with wedged mount attempts (in ways I don't
claim to understand).

It is a very useful feature, and these problems occur only in
specialized situations. I suggest that you turn it off
in root's .emacs.
