And default to symmetric encryption, unless there's are some obvious hints somewhere that the user doesn't want that, like if a gpg agent is present and can be used. (I don't really know how that works, so I'm not sure whether that's feasible.) I've spent the evening testing out starting Gnus as a blank slate, with just (setq gnus-select-method '(nnimap "imap.gmail.com")) in .emacs, and absolutely nothing else.
