emacs: Cannot connect to X server foo.
Check the DISPLAY environment variable or use `-d'.
Also use the `xhost' program to verify that it is set to permit
connections from your machine.

"xhost" is a poor recomendation, it is insecure, especially on
multi-user systems or untrusted networks.
I suggest something like the below. Opinions?
