This bug report will be sent to the Bug-GNU-Emacs mailing list
and the GNU bug tracker at debbugs.gnu.org. Please check that
the From: line contains a valid email address. After a delay of up
to one day, you should receive an acknowledgment at that address.
Please write in English if possible, as the Emacs maintainers
usually do not have translators for other languages.
Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug, and
the precise symptoms of the bug. If you can, give a recipe
starting from `emacs -Q':
Say I dont have emacs running and call emacsclient as follows:
$ emacsclient --alternate-editor emacs foo.txt
Error (warning) message as follows is given:
emacsclient: can't find socket; have you started the server?
To start the server in Emacs, type "M-x server-start".
After printing which, it starts ok, editing the file!!
It seems to me this message should not come if --alternate-editor is
supplied.
If Emacs crashed, and you have the Emacs process in the gdb debugger,
please include the output from the following gdb commands:
`bt full' and `xbacktrace'.
For information about debugging Emacs, please read the file
/usr/share/emacs/24.3/etc/DEBUG.

It it is letting you know that it tried to contact an existing Emacs
instance but failed, and it shares the message text with the non
--alternate-editor case. Yes, the message could be special-cased for
--alternate-editor, but it doesn't seem like a big deal.

Sure its minor.
Nevertheless its a bogus error message.
Also as you say the messages are shared; they are not the same:
Without alternate
$ emacsclient foo
emacsclient: can't find socket; have you started the server?
To start the server in Emacs, type "M-x server-start".
emacsclient: No socket or alternate editor. Please use:
--socket-name
--server-file (or environment variable EMACS_SERVER_FILE)
--alternate-editor (or environment variable ALTERNATE_EDITOR)
With alternate
$ emacsclient -a emacs foo
emacsclient: can't find socket; have you started the server?
To start the server in Emacs, type "M-x server-start".
In any case thanks for working on emacs and yeah its not a big deal!

This has been changed in Emacs 28 -- if you say -q --alternate-editor,
it'll no longer output that message.
