Its docstring says
  compile is an interactive compiled Lisp function...
  Additionally, with universal prefix arg, compilation buffer will be in
  comint mode, i.e. interactive.

Sounds great, but I notice in that buffer, M-p (command
comint-previous-input) is broken. It sticks the prompt in front of
what is prompted!
C-u M-x compile sh -i
$ who
jidanni  tty1         Jun  6 06:25
who$ who$ 
sh: who$: command not found
who$ $ who$ $ 
sh: who$: command not found

True, this is the first time I ever tried C-u M-x compile, but think
about the kids. They would be heartbroken :-)

I believe I've fixed it on the CVS trunk now,
