Sorry, but I cannot reproduce this with emacs-23.1 on GNU/Linux.

i d

does not return "no diary file" for me, but creates an empty file.

If I follow the rest of your instructions, it works fine for me.

What does the following command return for you:

M-x list-load-path-shadows


Also, please try this:

> M-x toggle-debug-on-error
