AFAIK, Windows has higher process call overhead, and in this solution we call both 'find' and 'grep' once per file. It will be easy to write a version that doesn't use 'find' at all. If necessary, we can also pass multiple files at a time to 'grep'. You might check which versions of 'find' and 'grep' you're using, though: does M-x rgrep work all right? I remember there were some older versions of these tools compiled for Windows, with pathological performance.
