and the precise symptoms of the bug:

Actions: 

M-x term (to enter terminal mode)
^L (to clear screen)
ls (to list files)

at which point emacs freezes indefinitely and must be
killed.

This problem was solved by Daiki Ueno.  His patch will be part of the
next Emacs release.  FYI here is the patch:
