What happens if you invoke Emacs with "emacs -q --no-site-file", and then 
turn on these highlighting features from within Emacs?  What happens if 
you evaluate the customizations in your .emacs from a running session 
invoked as mentioned above?

It's hard to tell without more information.

It doesn't help, unfortunately, since your binary appears to be stripped 
(no debug info), so the debugger cannot tell anything interesting.  Can 
you produce a backtrace from an unstripped binary?

The crash still occurs in those circumstances.  Also, I just found,
when I invoke isearch.  So the following is enough to provoke the error:

% emacs -q --no-site-file
C-s <SPC>

Thanks, this indicates that the problem is with your version of termcap 
library, probably with ncurses.  The details are described in etc/PROBLEMS
(search for "Emacs aborts inside the function `tparam1'"), which also
suggests a solution.
