For some reason, now Gnus v5.13 in GNU Emacs 23.3.1
(i386-mingw-nt5.1.2600) on Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 3,
refuses to invoke the (gnus-face-from-file ...) function correctly in
~/.gnus.el.

The following code in my ~/.gnus.el file apparently fails at file
conversion of a .jpg file to a face file:

(setq gnus-posting-styles
   '((".*"
      (name "Benjamin L. Russell")
      ("Face"
       (gnus-face-from-file "~/butterflyLang.jpg")
       ))))

Strangely, the following code does work at the same task:

(setq gnus-posting-styles
   '((".*"
      (name "Benjamin L. Russell")
      ("Face"
       (gnus-face-from-file "~/butterflyLang.jpg")

The following procedure reproduces this bug:

1. Invoke Emacs in Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 3, by
double-clicking on C:\emacs\emacs-23.3\bin\runemacs.exe.

2. Within Emacs, type the following command:

> M-x gnus RET

3. Within Gnus, subscribe (if not already subscribed) to the news.test
newsgroup.

4. Within Gnus, type the following command to post a new message:

> a

5. Compose a test message, with subject, say, "test," and subject body,
say "test."

6. Send the message with the following command:

> C-c C-c

7. After a few seconds, refresh the newsgroup with the following
command:

> / N

8. Read the test message just posted. The message will be missing the
face header, which should be an icon placed immediately to the left of
the sender name in the "From" field of the message.

The Gnus manual says:

`gnus-face-from-file' takes a JPEG file as the parameter, and then
converts the file to Face format by using the
   `gnus-convert-image-to-face-command' shell command.

gnus-convert-image-to-face-command has the default value:

  "convert -scale 48x48! %s -colors %d png:-"

I know nothing about MS Windows, but I'd be surprised if this works there.

Even if Imagemagick is installed?

You tell me. Does shell-command-to-string work on MS Windows?
Does it return data to stdout? I have no idea...

Yes, of course.

Who does? the `convert' command or shell-command-to-string? I don't
think I understand the question.

I think you can ignore me. I guess I meant: does MS Windows have a
/bin/sh equivalent? Does it have a stdout and stderr, and can "convert"
be called from this shell and send its output to stdout? Does it work
out of the box or does it need to be configured?
(No need to answer these questions for my sake.)

Yes, yes, and yes. (Even MS-DOS has these features.)

It works out of the box.

I think it's important that you know these factoids.

My guess is that the OP doesn't have Imagemagick installed, and so
convert.exe either is not on PATH or is some other program, not the
one expected by gnus-face-from-file.

Benjamin, what does the following command produce, if you type it at
the command prompt?

    convert --version

Likely the Microsoft-supplied tool to convert a FAT volume into a NTFS one...

Yup. So I don't think this is a bug in Gnus.

And the built-in ImageMagick functions (which it could be using,
theoretically) don't really allow you to do stuff like that, because it
doesn't expose the required interface. It's more display-oriented.

Sorry; I missed that part.

So what does

(shell-command "convert -scale 48x48! c:/some/image.jpg -colors %d png:-")

eval to for you?

Yes. It sounds like a nice project for someone for Emacs 25. :-)

That should be:

(shell-command "convert -scale 48x48! c:/some/image.jpg -colors 10 png:-")

I would rather suggest to start with this:

  M-: (executable-find "convert") RET

It evaluated to a PNG file (for some reason, I am unable to copy-and-paste the contents from Emacs to this application, perhaps because the buffer comprises a PNG file).

I had to send another response because I didn't see your correction until after I had sent the first reply; I'm rushing to meet a deadline in 14.5 hours.

Same evaluation: another PNG file.

Could you eval this?

This is the output from Emacs:

  (gnus-shell-command-to-string "convert -scale 48x48! c:/butterflyLang.jpg -colors 10 png:-")

You need to start Gnus first started first to use this stuff.

After starting Gnus, this is the output that I received:

----- output begins immediately after this line -----
Debugger entered--Lisp error: (void-function gnus-shell-command-to-string)
  (gnus-shell-command-to-string "convert -scale 48x48! c:/butterflyLang.jpg -colors 10 png:-")
  eval((gnus-shell-command-to-string "convert -scale 48x48! c:/butterflyLang.jpg -colors 10 png:-"))
  eval-expression((gnus-shell-command-to-string "convert -scale 48x48! c:/butterflyLang.jpg -colors 10 png:-") nil)
  call-interactively(eval-expression nil nil)
----- output ends immediately before this line -----

Starting Gnus first doesn't seem to have changed the behavior.

Okay; that resulted in a PNG file.

So everything works. :-)

Are you sure the problem isn't that the ~ isn't expanded properly? In
the tests you're using C:, but in the original report you're using ~...

Entering

  M-: (gnus-face-from-file "~/butterflyLang.jpg")

and

  M-: (gnus-face-from-file "C:/home/butterflyLang.jpg")

resulted in

Try `M-x edebug-defun' through `gnus-face-from-file' in gnus-fun.el to
