This problem appears here too. Hence reporting as bug.

I experience this too, with Emacs 21.2 compiled with Lesstif.
The difference is that the keypresses are displayed, but the cursor is not diplayed
until you move the mouse outside the emacs frame and then move it inside.

I just tried this, and I think it is a feature of the menu bar.
This click seems to activate the menu bar, so that dragging the mouse
across it brings the menus up.

Another click on the menu bar area deactivates it, it seems.

Whether this feature is really a good idea, I don't know.
I also don't know how to turn it off--but an X toolkit wizard
might know.

Agreed that it is a feature, but there is a bug in the feature, that causes
emacs to segfault if you hit the left-arrow key right after clicking to the
right of the menus in the menubar. If one hits the right-arrow, the File
menu is selected, and thereafter left/right wrap around from File to Help
(and back), but if the first key after the mouse-click is the left arrow,
emacs will crash and burn. This is with M-x emacs-version of:
GNU Emacs 21.2.50.5 (i686-pc-linux-gnu, X toolkit, Xaw3d scroll bars) of 2002-04-23 on meat

Cheers,
