Anyway, I've uploaded the patch so that is is not lost. Maybe in the future someone revisits this and finds it cool. I just want to get rid of the mandatory (load custom-file) in my init.el and not break other people's current configs. Again, I'm "preaching Emacs" among my students and the question of why custom-file is not loaded automatically if you define it is coming up only too often. These youngsters have made me rethink many things...
