I reverted to

In GNU Emacs 30.0.50 (build 1, x86_64-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version
 3.24.33, cairo version 1.16.0) of 2023-05-15 built on 7d6dc64325f6
Repository revision: ebf5e4ca1cd39d3f23c4e37d9bdfeb2bf347df6d
Repository branch: master

and that works correctly. Time permitting, I'll try to come closer to the
breakage point.
Currently under extreme time pressure... (exam season)
