First, thanks for adding the SSHFS method, it works really well in
general! However, I think it should be available by default:
$ emacs -Q -batch -eval '(print (directory-files "/ssh:localhost:/sys"))'
Tramp: Sending command ‘exec ssh -e none localhost’
Tramp: Found remote shell prompt on ‘localhost’
("." ".." "block" "bus" "class" "dev" "devices" "firmware" "fs" "hypervisor" "kernel" "module" "power")
(as expected)
But:
$ emacs -Q -batch -eval '(print (directory-files "/sshfs:localhost:/sys/"))'
, Method ‘sshfs’ is not known.
Debugger entered--Lisp error: (user-error "Method ‘sshfs’ is not known.")
signal(user-error ("Method ‘sshfs’ is not known."))
tramp-error((tramp-file-name "sshfs" nil nil "localhost" nil "/sys/" nil) user-error "Method `%s' is not known." "sshfs")
apply(tramp-error (tramp-file-name "sshfs" nil nil "localhost" nil "/sys/" nil) user-error "Method `%s' is not known." "sshfs")
tramp-user-error((tramp-file-name "sshfs" nil nil "localhost" nil "/sys/" nil) "Method `%s' is not known." "sshfs")
tramp-dissect-file-name("/sshfs:localhost:/sys/")
tramp-file-name-handler(expand-file-name "/sshfs:localhost:/sys/" nil)
expand-file-name("/sshfs:localhost:/sys/" nil)
apply(expand-file-name ("/sshfs:localhost:/sys/" nil))
tramp-autoload-file-name-handler(expand-file-name "/sshfs:localhost:/sys/" nil)
directory-files("/sshfs:localhost:/sys/")
(print (directory-files "/sshfs:localhost:/sys/"))
eval((print (directory-files "/sshfs:localhost:/sys/")) t)
command-line-1(("-eval" "(print (directory-files \"/sshfs:localhost:/sys/\"))"))
command-line()
normal-top-level()
This can be fixed by first loading tramp-sshfs and the loading tramp
(any other combination doesn't seem to work):
$ emacs -Q -batch -l tramp-sshfs -l tramp -eval '(print (directory-files "/sshfs:localhost:/sys/"))'
("." ".." "block" "bus" "class" "dev" "devices" "firmware" "fs" "hypervisor" "kernel" "module" "power")
But it would be great if this could just work out of the box.

It works for me:
--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
$ emacs -Q -batch -eval '(print (directory-files "/sshfs:localhost:/sys/"))'
("." ".." "block" "bus" "class" "dev" "devices" "firmware" "fs" "hypervisor" "kernel" "module" "power")
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---
What happens, if you try the following:
--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
$ emacs -Q -batch -l tramp -eval '(print (mapcar (quote car) tramp-methods))'
("adb" "ftp" "sftp" "nextcloud" "mtp" "gdrive" "davs" "dav" "afp" "rclone" "fcp" "psftp" "pscp" "plinkx" "plink" "krlogin" "ksu" "doas" "sudo" "sg" "su" "nc" "telnet" "sshx" "ssh" "remsh" "rsh" "rsync" "scpx" "scp" "remcp" "rcp" "smb" "sshfs" "sudoedit")
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---
In my case, you see the supported Tramp methods, including "sshfs".
Best regards, Michael.

$ src/emacs -Q -batch -l tramp -eval '(print (mapcar (quote car)
tramp-methods))'
("adb" "ftp" "sftp" "nextcloud" "mtp" "gdrive" "davs" "dav" "afp"

"sudo" "sg" "su" "nc" "telnet" "sshx" "ssh" "remsh" "rsh" "rsync"
"scpx" "scp" "remcp" "rcp" "smb" "sudoedit")
It does work on the master branch (the bug report is for Emacs 28), so
looks like it has been fixed in the meantime? Maybe it would be
possible to backport the fix onto the release branch.

OK, removing lisp/net/tramp-loaddefs.el and manually regenerating it
fixes the issue. So this is not a bug in the Emacs code itself. Maybe
there's a small bug in the Makefiles around detecting whether
tramp-loaddefs.el needs to be rebuilt?

There shouldn't be a difference between master and release branch. Can
you please check lisp/net/tramp-loaddefs.el? There should be something like
--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
(tramp--with-startup (add-to-list 'tramp-methods `(,tramp-sshfs-method (tramp-mount-args (("-C") ("-p" "%p") ("-o" "idmap=user,reconnect"))) (tramp-login-program "ssh") (tramp-login-args (("-q") ("-l" "%u") ("-p" "%p") ("-e" "none") ("%h") ("%l"))) (tramp-direct-async t) (tramp-remote-shell ,tramp-default-remote-shell) (tramp-remote-shell-login ("-l")) (tramp-remote-shell-args ("-c")))) (add-to-list 'tramp-connection-properties `(,(format "/%s:" tramp-sshfs-method) "direct-async-process" t)) (tramp-set-completion-function tramp-sshfs-method tramp-completion-function-alist-ssh))
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---
Perhaps you regenerate this file? Try
--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
$ rm lisp/net/tramp-loaddefs.el
$ make -C lisp autoloads
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---
Best regards, Michael.

Yes, an outdated loaddefs was the problem. See my other response (sorry, I should have CC'ed you on that).

In lisp/Makefile.in, there is
--8<---------------cut here---------------start------------->8---
# Update TRAMP internal autoloads. Maybe we could move tramp*.el into
# an own subdirectory. OTOH, it does not hurt to keep them in
# lisp/net.
TRAMP_DIR = $(lisp)/net
TRAMP_SRC = $(sort $(wildcard ${TRAMP_DIR}/tramp*.el))
TRAMP_SRC := $(filter-out ${TRAMP_DIR}/tramp-loaddefs.el,${TRAMP_SRC})
$(TRAMP_DIR)/tramp-loaddefs.el: $(TRAMP_SRC)
$(AM_V_GEN)$(emacs) -l autoload \
--eval "(setq generate-autoload-cookie \";;;###tramp-autoload\")" \
--eval "(setq generated-autoload-file (expand-file-name (unmsys--file-name \"$@\")))" \
-f batch-update-autoloads $(TRAMP_DIR)
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---
That looks fine to me. We could try to search where a possible bug is, but
this would require a recipe for reproduction. Do we have such a recipe?
Best regards, Michael.

Probably not. Maybe I just haven't run 'make bootstrap' for too long.
Feel free to close this if you don't see anything obviously wrong - it's probably not worth spending too much time on.

OK, closing the bug.
Best regards, Michael.
