Why is it needed? what doesn't still work right, now that I committed
my changes?

After customizing the variables, they don't become active immediately, only the next time the timers are restarted (e.g. after a focus-out/in event). The patches restarts the timers when setting the customization variables so that the new settings become active immediately. This is the root cause for the "After losing focus" part of the bug title.
