Subject: bug#12294: 24.2.50; `C-h m' in Buffer Menu - regresssion
Date: Tue, 28 Aug 2012 08:12:42 -0700 [thread overview]
Message-ID: <A604E8EAA99942A5A2AFBA3387026DB0@us.oracle.com> (raw)
This is a regression for users. C-h m in the buffer menu is not
user-oriented anymore. Instead, it tells you of matters that are
essentially implementation-oriented.
Before the doc-string change to Buffer-menu-mode, C-h m told users what
the mode was actually about and how to use it - which is the purpose of
C-h m. It listed important key bindings.
Now, C-h m tells you how the mode is invoked! Of course, if you used
C-h m then it has already been invoked!
And then it goes on to tell you what the mode's parent mode is, etc.
This is essentially information for Emacs-Lisp programmers or Emacs
developers. Some users might be interested, and yes, they can click the
link to `tabulated-list-mode' to get information about IT.
But users are now losing out on a description of BUFFER MENU mode, which
is what C-h m should give them, in Buffer Menu mode.
It is all well and good to factor code, for the benefit of Emacs Dev
maintenance etc. But please do not forget about Emacs USERS. Please
restore the information that was there before, helping users understand
and learn how to use Buffer Menu mode. Please do not just send users
off to learn about Tabulated List mode.
