This node has the title "Single or Numbered Backups".

The paragraph about `backup-directory-alist' does not belong in this
node, even though the second half of this sentence (which should be a
separate sentence, BTW) does mention something pertinent to backup file
names.

A typical use is to add an element `("." . DIR)' to make all
backups in the directory with absolute name DIR; Emacs modifies the
backup file names to avoid clashes between files with the same names
  originating in different directories.

This paragraph belongs in node `Backup', which is about whether, how,
and where to save backups.

I've now moved it and elided the bit about applying to both numbered and
single backups.
