Do you mean - TAB?
Anyway, I installed
xfonts-unifont/oldstable,now 1:9.0.06-2 all [installed,automatic]
PCF (bitmap) version of GNU Unifont
and chose
-unknown-Unifont-normal-normal-normal-*-*-*-*-*-d-0-iso10646-1
and everything worked fine...

Sounds like a bug in whoever put together the font package? This is in
Slackware?
