Let me add the that file in question is "~/gnu-emacs/.gnu-emacs.elc" -
this file is loaded by ~/.emacs (which is the value of
`user-init-file').
"~/gnu-emacs/" contains a separate git repo and I always compile all the
Elisp stuff in that directory. Dunno if anything of that matters here.
