While in gnus reading a message which contains an url, selecting 'Open
Link using browse-url' from the right-click menu fails with a pop-up
error dialog stating a file was not found. The same error happens with
the command browse-url-at-point on an url in any buffer.

To test I put the url 'http://google.com/' in a buffer and got the error
message:

/home/deyke/http:/google.com: No such file or directory

I cannot reproduce this, but I'm on a different OS.

Can you show a Lisp backtrace from this error?

Thanks.

I do not get a lisp error, but a popup window showing the error
message.

I narrowed the problem so far to

(browse-url "http://google.com/")

which fails.

Even if you set debug-on-error to a non-nil value?

It doesn't fail here.

If you cannot produce a backtrace, I hope someone else will be able to
reproduce and report the details.

Thanks.

If setting debug-on-error doesn't help, you can also try setting
debug-on-signal to non-nil, and/or setting debug-ignored-errors to
nil.

Yes.

I narrowed it down a little more:

(call-process "xdg-open" nil 0 nil "http://google.com/")

fails with the same popup error message.

Since call-process is in C code, I have to stop there fow now.

I did all this, but I still get no lisp error, just a gui popup error
dialog. Maybe the error is reported by xdg-open when it is called with
wrong arguments?

Sorry about all that noise, please close that defect.

I just found out that

xdg-open http://google.com/

in a terminal window produces the same error message, so it looks like
xdg-open on debian testing (or at least on my system) is broken. Emacs
is just fine!

Thanks for telling us. Closing the issue.
