As mentioned in passing in bug #34911, I think the default value should
be this:

"\\`\\.?#\\|\\`\\.\\'\\|\\`\\.\\.\\'"

instead of this:

"^\\.?#\\|^\\.$\\|^\\.\\.$"

Right, I'd also escape the "." with [], because so many backslashes make
my eyes hurt.
