Just wanted to register my displeasure at having to customize the four
basic Ediff faces because you have changed their default attributes.

Just to get back the same Ediff appearance I have in previous Emacs
versions I had to open a previous version and track down those four
faces and their default attributes, then customize each of them in the
latest Emacs 24.

And there is not even anything in NEWS about this...

Was there any discussion in emacs-devel about whether these defaults
should be changed? I didn't notice any. That's where the discussion of
changes to defaults belongs.

You don't need to open a previous version, because you can just remove
the added face characteristic for 88 colors.

> And there is not even anything in NEWS about this...

It's documented in NEWS.

Sorry, I have no idea what that means or how to discover what it means. Could
you please explain?

Where? I searched for "ediff". Based on your reply now, I searched for "88"
and for "characteristic" and for "colors". Still no luck. I don't see anything
in your reply that relates to any NEWS entry.

Oh... now I found it - maybe. Searching for "diff" shows an entry that says
something that might be related.

But how to know? It says nothing about any of the faces I mentioned, or even
any face names that are close. And it says nothing about my "removing [or your
adding] the added face characteristic for 88 colors" to get back the former
default behavior.

I really have no idea what this change to ediff (or to colors?) is about. What
face characteristic for 88 colors?

I meant that the condition (min-colors 88) was added just in front of
other conditions. If you remove it, you get the previous colors.

Ok, I'll add mention of ediff too.

Just in front where? Sorry to be obtuse, but I just don't know what you are
referring to. In Customize I don't see anything about `min-colors'. And I
haven't changed my setup wrt colors. I have zillions of colors, so definitely
more than 88.

Thanks.

In Customize you can do what you want with the following steps:

1. M-x customize-face RET ediff-current-diff-A RET

2. Click the button "State".

3. Select "7 - For All Kinds of Displays"

4. Click the button "DEL" on the top two elements of display.

I see. I was totally unaware of #7 - thanks.

When was this feature added? I don't find anything about it in the NEWS (for
either Emacs 24 or 23).

1997. Although back then it was called "Show all display
specs". The current wording was introduced in 2006.
