Perhaps we should try to make Emacs 23's default behavior identical to that of Emacs 22: as this bug report shows, it's not immediately obvious that the windows get split this way on purpose, and changing the default split will confuse the user if she's used to look for the new window at a given place. Old habits die hard. Luca, what do you think?
