Hi all,
sometimes, when i quit emacs i have:

save-buffers-kill-emacs: Timed out waiting for reply from selection owner

Can't reproduce at every time, but many times during last 2 days.

M-x debug-on-entry RET save-buffers-kill-emacs
=>
Debugger entered--entering a function:
  save-buffers-kill-emacs(nil)
* save-buffers-kill-terminal(nil)
  call-interactively(save-buffers-kill-terminal nil nil)

This show error at everytime in emacs -Q

Please see bug #8760, it is likely your issue too:
http://debbugs.gnu.org/cgi/bugreport.cgi?bug=8760

However, you may be running a different desktop environment, so: What
desktop environment (KDE, GNOME, XFCE, ...) and what version of it are
you using, if any?

 > M-x debug-on-entry RET save-buffers-kill-emacs

Your subject line may stem from a misinterpretation of the debugger
output (the call-interactively bit is the showing three args to
call-interactively, one of which is save-buffers-kill-terminal, not two
args to save-buffers-kill-terminal)?

Yes it is the same.

Erk. Gnome hasn't shown problems previously, at least not with its
normal builtin clipboard manager (in gnome-settings-daemon). The way
xfce fixed their problems was by basing their new clipboard manager on
gnome's! However, I do not see any problem with gnome 2.30.2 on my
system. I don't know what gnome version Chong Yidong was testing with.

Just in case: Are you running anything else "clipboard related" on your
system? Say an alternative/extended clipboard history (may show up as a
little clipboard icon in your system tray).

AFAIK no.

After updating Emacs, i didn't have this message anymore, but emacs is
slow to quit.

On an emacs -Q, debug-on-entry on save-buffers-kill-emacs show always
same error.

Also, i am using ubuntu 11.04.

You mean you updated from the bzr trunk, not applied any patches? If so,
what bzr revision number? As savannah's been having problems I'm not
quite sure I'm running the latest trunk (r104481 in my case), but I
don't see any changes that should be relevant - i.e. I don't think the
exit-after timeout adjustment as discussed in #8760 has been committed yet.

Can you now actually copy in emacs, then close emacs, then paste into
other apps the text you copied in emacs? (wondering if you somehow have
a strangely "slow" clipboard manager that minor fluctuations have now
brought within your rebuilt emacs' timeout period)

Did you logout and in again (i.e. a new gnome session) in the meantime?
(might have restarted the daemon emacs is trying to talk to -
gnome-settings-daemon in the usual gnome case)

> On an emacs -Q, debug-on-entry on save-buffers-kill-emacs show always

What error do you mean? The earlier output you showed was not an error,
just a pretty normal call stack, you'd have to step through a fair bit
from the entry to save-buffers-kill-emacs before hitting the point where
emacs tries to talk to the clipboard manager (and that's in C anyway).

Usually i hibernate, but yes i had to logout/in these last days.

Yes you're right, that's due to the timeout in this case.

I'm also testing on 2.30.2.

Have you noticed any other applications being slow to close? If it's a
misbehaving clipboard manager, Emacs should not be the only client
affected---but maybe it's waiting longer than most.

Also, could you just double check by reducing x-selection-timeout and
seeing if it has any effect? (Maybe x_clipboard_manager_save_all should
bind x-selection-timeout to a smaller number, at the risk of losing
clipboard contents...)

So I remembered it's the future, and I brought up a fresh install of
ubuntu-11.04-desktop-i386 in a kvm vm.

Under the "Ubuntu Classic" (i.e. real gnome) session, afraid I can't see
the issue.

I couldn't test the full "Ubuntu" session (i.e. ubuntu's "Unity"
...thing) as it needs 3d hw.

I installed and tested their "Unity 2D" session though, no issue (it
still has a normal gnome-settings-daemon running).

Which of the above are you using? Probably the first, but just thought
I should check - it's still possible that the session I can't currently
test does something funny, though I doubt it.

So the issue may well be local to your machine and/or caused by some
extra thing you have installed. It doesn't seem to be an issue with
gnome 2.32.1 in general.

I use this one.

So, um. Following Jan D.'s discovery under bug #8869 [1], I can in fact
reliably replicate that emacs-side issue under Ubuntu. Thierry,
depending on _how_ you exit emacs or close frames, your issue may really
be the same problem. If you routinely use the window's close button
rather than C-x C-c, for example.

When I was testing, I was always using either the keyboard or my gfx
tablet which picks up hires movement jitters keeping things working.:-(

I always close emacs with C-x C-c, i use no menu, scrollbar, buttons etc
...

Note that of course setting `x-select-enable-clipboard-manager' to nil
have fixed the problem:

(when (boundp 'x-select-enable-clipboard-manager)
  (setq x-select-enable-clipboard-manager nil))

(I really don't need such feature, i have always an emacs session
running, and even if i close emacs, i don't feel the need of keeping
stuff in the clipboard.)

Thanks.
