The following characters are always escaped in a symbol:

		if (c == '\"' || c == '\\' || c == '\''
		    || c == ';' || c == '#' || c == '(' || c == ')'
		    || c == ',' || c == '.' || c == '`'
		    || c == '[' || c == ']' || c == '?' || c <= 040
		    || c == NO_BREAK_SPACE
