After (toggle-truncate-lines) so that truncation is enabled, I find
repeated use of scroll-left after one has obviously gone beyond the
right margin of the file, just gets one deeper and deeper into
trouble: one will need just as many scroll-right's before one will be
in sight of land (get back to the right margin).

If I were you, I would beep when trying to scroll-left beyond the
right margin.
