Perhaps shell-command, shell-command-on-region, dired-do-shell-command
could prompt the user with what they last did with them, as is the trend.

Be sure to put the cursor at the end of the string so he can adjust it
without further ado.

In fact, put the cursor where he last had it, not necessarily the end.
