I do ^s and then type SPACE f
because I want to search for SPACE f.
instead even "-f" along with " f" are highlighted.

I can't reproduce this, "-f" is not highlighted for me (see attached
screenshot).

Not reproducible on my machine as well.
Dan, any details you omitted from your original report? Do you see
this in "emacs -Q", for example?
