Using

    ftcrhb:-PfEd-DejaVu Sans Mono-normal-normal-normal-*-25-*-*-*-m-0-iso10646-1 (#x957)

and

libfreetype6/stable,now 2.9.1-3+deb10u1

(although I'm not sure that's what Emacs uses), I don't get a buggy
display in Emacs 27:

That is, there are no gaps here.  (Debian Stable.)
