No.  As the doc string says:

One reason to not use faces to visualize spaces (i.e., not
include `face' in `whitespace-style') is to use `whitespace-mode'
only for cleaning up a buffer.  See `whitespace-cleanup' and
`whitespace-cleanup-region'.
